Squadron Leader Mark Long commemorated in Market Stainton a year after tragic crash during memorial flight

A plaque has been unveiled in Market Stainton to honour Squadron Leader Mark Long, an RAF pilot who died in a Spitfire crash near RAF Coningsby on May 25, 2024. Sqn Ldr Long was flying a memorial tribute for a World War II Lancaster bomber crew when his vintage Spitfire crashed.

The dedication ceremony, held on May 24, 2025, marked the first anniversary of his death. The plaque was sponsored by the Royal Air Forces Association and serves as a tribute to his selfless dedication to preserving RAF history and freedoms. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight continues its legacy with his memory.
